Do shopfronts and shop signs need planning permission?
When planning permission and advertisement consent apply to shopfronts, shutters and signs.
In the UK, a new or materially altered shopfront usually needs planning permission, and many illuminated or projecting shop signs need separate advertisement consent. External roller shutters often need planning permission too. Purely internal fit-out work does not normally need planning permission, but a change of use can.

When is planning permission needed for a shopfront?
Replacing a shopfront with one that looks materially different, changing its materials, or adding external features generally needs planning permission. Like-for-like repairs usually do not. Rules are stricter in conservation areas and on listed buildings, where even small changes can need consent.
Which signs need advertisement consent?
Some signs benefit from deemed consent, but illuminated fascia and projecting signs, signs above certain heights and most signs in conservation areas generally need express advertisement consent from the local planning authority. The rules differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so we check with the relevant council before manufacture.
Do roller shutters need permission?
External shutters fitted to the face of a building usually need planning permission, and many councils prefer perforated or internal shutters on high streets. Internal shutters behind the glass often avoid the need for consent.
Questions people ask
Can you apply for planning for us?

What happens if I fit a sign without consent?
The council can require its removal and may take enforcement action, so it is worth checking before the sign is made.
